A Service Learning Initiative in Cape Town
Annually, a group of students from the University of Tennessee Knoxville head to Cape Town for a summer abroad program. Led by their professor, Dr Amadou Sall, these students set out to broaden their academic horizon whilst spending a month in the beautiful setting of Cape Town at the foot of Table Mountain. The focus of the program is Social Justice and students explore the achievements and challenges of the New South Africa, a relatively young democracy. Students also actively engage in community projects which they design, budget for and execute themselves. These projects in the past have involved the building of gardens, libraries, volunteering at schools, soup kitchens and orphanages.
